Expanding Hematology Education and Training

ASH’s awards programs propel the careers of thousands of hematology trainees, investigators, and researchers alike. In 2024, ASH committed $12 million in funds to 1,124 recipients across a wide array of awards – from support for trainees in the Hematology Inclusion Pathway, to global awards and abstract achievement awards.

Empowering a New Generation of Hematology Leaders

ASH launched the Hematology Inclusion Pathway, the successor program to the ASH Minority Recruitment Initiative (MRI). This comprehensive 13-year longitudinal career pathway of competitive awards strives to foster and empower a new generation of leaders in hematology – from medical students to mid-career professionals.

Classical Hematology Advancement Mentorship Program

Mentorship plays a critical role in career development, and ASH saw a need to address the gap of mentors in classical hematology by establishing the Classical Hematology Advancement Mentorship Program (CHAMP), which will pair first- or second-year hematology/oncology fellows with a mentor who specializes in classical hematology. The first cohort of 39 mentors and 39 mentees will kick off with a two-day retreat in May 2025.

Quality Improvement Training Institute

The Quality Improvement Training Institute is a 16-month hybrid educational program that trains clinicians to be leaders in quality improvement (QI). QITI equips trainees with fundamental QI skills to support continued assessment and improvement of patient experience and outcomes in hematology. In 2024, 26 clinicians from five institutions across the U.S. participated in the program.

ASH Trainee Council

The ASH Trainee Council launched Hearts of Hematology, a social media storytelling project that showcases what makes hematology a unique specialty. These stories come from hematologists from all walks of life and range from how hemophilia has motivated one hematologist in the treatment of his patients to how patients can shape a physician’s viewpoint.

"While hemophilia has shaped my life, my unique personal experience allows me to better relate to patients with similar conditions. Thankfully, due to the ready availability of safe treatment, I have absolutely no limitations in my work as a pediatric hematologist. I am driven to take the great care I received and pay it forward to the next generation of children with bleeding disorders."

Innovating Education and Improving Certification

ASH is a leader in hematology education, and the Society continued its work providing and promoting high-quality education resources and tools, including relaunching the HemeTalks podcast, continuing the Hematology Review Series, and offering much more exclusive content on ASH Academy On Demand.

ASH used social media to deliver innovative, bite-sized learning experiences through #ASHSlideSaturday, the first of several social media education opportunities to come.

Continuing Board Certification

ASH put boots on the ground to address issues related to continuing board certification throughout 2024. ASH convened several meetings with internal medicine subspecialty organizations to advocate for changes that would make the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA) program for continuing certification less onerous for physicians.

In response to ASH’s longstanding efforts to promote certification reform, ABIM announced new hematology-focused LKAs for malignant and classical hematology, which will launch in 2026. ASH continues to strongly advocate for a continuing certification process designed to help physicians enhance their competence without the stress of high-stakes assessments. Stay up to date on ASH’s latest efforts to urge overhaul of ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification here.
